Once you've selected a class, you then
can choose your race and appearance.
Neither have any impact on the game
mechanics, they simply allow you to add
flavor and uniqueness to your character.
Class Mechanics
The interesting part in TOR is that each
class has a particular mechanic that sets
them apart from the rest. Knights and
Warriors use Focus and Rage, a point
system that is used to power some strong
abilities. Some abilities will generate points
while others will consume them. It makes
for a nice balance where you need to
balance your available points in order to
use your abilities at the proper time.
Consular and Inquisitors use Force,
which is essentially a large power bar that
all your abilities use to varying degrees. It
recharges on it's own at a decent pace,
which can be augmented with skills,
abilities and items. It is akin to mana in
other games.
Smugglers and Imperial Agents use
Energy to power nearly all of their abilities.
This is a rather unique energy bar in that it
has a maximum amount that only lasts a
short period of time and regenerates at
different rates, depending on how much
you have. At 60% or above, you
regenerate at full while below that you take
a significant penalty, which feels like
crawling through mud. This does give you
the freedom to unload like crazy near the
end of combat or to save your skin but for
drawn-out fights, you'll need to conserve
your energy in order to be most effective.
They also have an interesting cover
mechanic, which lets you hide behind
objects and use a different skill set. At later
levels you can even create your own cover
points.
Finally Troopers and Bounty Hunters use
an Ammo and Heat mechanic, respectively.
These are essentially the same but the
Trooper loses ammo with skill use while the
Bounty Hunter gains Heat. Similar to
Smugglers and Imperial Agents, the less
ammo / more heat you have, the longer it
takes to restore, making skill juggling
important for success.
